Vitamin E trials 'fatally flawed'
In a new study and commentary in Free Radical Biology and Medicine, researchers concluded that the levels of vitamin E necessary to reduce oxidative stress – as measured by accepted biomarkers of lipid peroxidation – are about 1,600 to 3,200 I.U. daily, or four to eight times higher than those used in almost all past clinical trials. This could help explain the inconsistent results of many vitamin E trials for its value in preventing or treating cardiovascular disease, said Balz Frei, professor and director of the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, and co-author of the new commentary along with Jeffrey Blumberg, at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University.

Eat (Less) to Live (Longer) - New study reveals why restricting calories may lead to longevity
The researchers determined from cultures of human embryonic kidney cells that lower caloric intake sends a signal that activates a gene inside cells that codes for the enzyme NAMPT (nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase). The two- to four-fold surge in NAMPT in turn triggers the production of a molecule called NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), which plays a key role in cellular metabolism and signaling. The uptick in NAD levels activates the SIRT3 and SIRT4 genes, increasing levels of their corresponding SIRT3 and SIRT4 enzymes, which then flood the interior of the mitochondria. Sinclair says he's not sure exactly how SIRT3 and SIRT4 beef up the mitochondria's energy output, but that events leading to cell death are at the very least delayed when there are vast quantities of the enzymes.

Food additives make children behave badly
Britain’s food watchdog is warning all parents today of a clear link between additives and hyperactive behaviour in children. Research for the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and published in The Lancet has established the “deleterious effects” of taking a mixture of artifical extras that are added to drinks, sweets and processed foods. It has led the FSA to issue the advice to parents who believe their children to be hyperactive that they should cut out foods containing the E numbers analysed in the study.

Of course sugar gives nothing to the human metabolism - except a quick and in the long run very destructive high. Sugar lowers IQ, it kills by destroying the natural glucose metabolism, it is implicated in the genesis of cancer and it uses up important nutrients such as vitamin C. FDA Continues Pushing Natural Herb Sweetener Stevia Out of U.S.
Stevia is a main staple sweetener in many countries, including Japan and China, where it's found in multiple food products. Companies including Coca-Cola Co. and Cargill Inc. have been developing products that substitute stevia for artifical sweeteners like aspartame, but the FDA currently bans any food product from containing the natural sweetener.

According to the American Herbal Products Association, "Stevia leaf is a natural product that has been used for at least 400 years as a food product, principally as a sweetener or other flavoring agent. None of this common usage in foods has indicated any evidence of a safety problem. There are no reports of any government agency in any of the above countries indicating any public health concern whatsoever in connection with the use of stevia in foods."

National Health Federation submits Codex Comments on Aspartame
The National Health Federation is the only health-freedom group with the right to submit comments to this EWG (Codex Electronic Working Group on food additives) and we are doing just that – rest assured. Moreover, NHF will be attending the next CCFA (Codex Food Additives Committee) meeting to be held in April 2008. UK: Organic lobby targets 'dangerous' E-numbers
Two weeks ago the FSA published research by the University of Southampton which for the first time conclusively confirmed a link between specified additives and hyperactive behaviour. The FSA took the significant step of issuing revised guidance to consumers, recommending that they avoid products containing certain E-numbers if their children were showing signs of hyperactivity or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). But the move confounded health campaigners, who said the government had missed a chance to ban the additives, instead of placing a burden on parents.
E-numbers are a scheme that all but hides the real identity of additives put in foods. The names of sweeteners, preservatives and other chemicals in foods are substituted by numbers, which most consumers have no way of tracing. There is no publicly accessible comprehensive listing and little information on the dangers of various additives.

New York Sues Merck Over Vioxx
New York State Attorney General Andrew M Cuomo and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg have filed a lawsuit against Merck & Co Inc accusing the drugmaker of hiding risks posed by Vioxx and thereby defrauding Medicaid, the state supported insurance programme, of the moneys paid out for the prescriptions.

Merck withdrew Vioxx in 2004 because it significantly increased the risk of heart attack and stroke. The drug was approved for the treatment of osteoarthritis, dysmenorrhea, rheumatoid arthritis, migraine headaches and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Merck's Experimental AIDS Vaccine Fails
"It's very disappointing news," said Keith Gottesdiener, head of Merck's clinical infectious disease and vaccine research group. "A major effort to develop a vaccine for HIV really did not deliver on the promise."
Comments a friend of mine from Canada: "Since HIV/AIDS emerged in the early '80s, all known and accepted scientific investigative techniques have failed to prove the existence of a virus. No electron photograph (micrograph) of an isolated HIV particle has ever been published." He asks the question no one seems to ask : "....if an HIV vaccine is ever developed that does not injure or kill, how will anyone know that it works? By testing HIV–positive?" adding "... to produce a vaccine one must have a virus. No virus, no vaccine, no Nobel Prize!"

Less than one-third of women aware of landmark hormone therapy study, researcher finds
Despite the huge publicity generated by a 2002 study on the potential dangers of hormone therapy for postmenopausal women, new research from the Stanford University School of Medicine found that only 29 percent of women surveyed knew about the study two years later.

Senior author Randall Stafford, MD, PhD, associate professor of medicine at the Stanford Prevention Research Center, said the new study points out that the medical profession hasn't yet figured out an effective way of communicating crucial health information to patients. "This study suggests that we have a flawed mechanism for getting information down to the level of the population," Stafford said.

ADHD Drugs to Be Studied for Cardiovascular Risk
In his recent testimony before the House subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, Feb. 13, 2007, Dr. Steven Nissen, Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, Cleveland Clinic and President of the American College of Cardiology, testified about the dangers posed by ADHD drugs that are prescribed for 2.5 million U.S. children - 10% of 5th grade boys are on these drugs: "ADHD drugs are closely related to methamphetamine or 'speed,' a major drug of abuse." "ADHD drugs increase blood pressure. Approximately 25 children suffered sudden cardiac death after taking these drugs, occasionally after the first dose." "ADHD drugs are closely related to ephedra, a drug that the FDA has sought to ban from OTC products."

Effectiveness of drugs 'overstated because of biased testing'
Pharmaceutical companies are overstating the effectiveness of their drugs, and may be placing patients at greater risk, because animal laboratory studies they fund are biased, it was claimed yesterday. A survey of nearly 300 animal-test studies involving six different experimental drugs suggested that such flawed methodology is rampant in the drug-testing industry.

The Drug Safety Blindfold
A recent study in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that serious adverse drug events reported to the FDA were up by a large margin (260%) from 1998-2005. The increase over time was largely explained by increases of just 1 type of report – expedited reports from manufacturers of new, serious events not on the product label. Of the increase of 54,876 additional events in 2005 compared with 1998, expedited reports accounted for 48,080 (87.6%) of these events.
In other words, drug makers are scrambling to report serious side effects that have not been reported when asking for approval of their drugs but that are appearing once the drug is sold on the market. The drug approval process appears to be broken, passing drugs onto the market with only partial knowledge of the side effects to be expected.

Vera Hassner Sharav of AHRP comments: These findings confirm FDA's failure to protect the public from lethal drugs--both by approving drugs whose safety has not been demonstrated, and by failing to take action when a drug is identified as killing Americans. "The results highlight the importance of this public health problem and illustrate the need for improved systems to manage the risks of prescription drugs."

Pro-Consumer Drug Safety Reforms Agreed to in Final FDA Bill
Nearly three years to the day Vioxx was removed from the market, Congress has completed a major drug safety reform bill that will give FDA the power to hold pharmaceutical companies accountable for safety problems, and help ensure industry can’t keep drug risks hidden from the public, Consumers Union said.

Citing recent scientific studies which show vitamins, mineral chelators and various herbal extracts are far more capable of curing or preventing cancer than currently available anti-cancer drugs, health journalist Bill Sardi, author of the new book “You Don’t Have To Be Afraid Of Cancer Anymore,” declares the decades-long war on cancer has largely been won. “The problem now is getting the entrenched cancer care industry to lead patients to these discoveries,” he says.

EU watchdog calls for urgent action on Wi-Fi, mobile phone radiation
Europe's top environmental watchdog is calling for immediate action to reduce exposure to radiation from Wi-Fi, mobile phones and their masts. It suggests that delay could lead to a health crisis similar to those caused by asbestos, smoking and lead in petrol. The warning, from the EU's European Environment Agency (EEA) follows an international scientific review which concluded that safety limits set for the radiation are "thousands of times too lenient", and an official British report last week which concluded that it could not rule out the development of cancers from using mobile phones.

Antarctic ice grows to record levels
Over 500 scientists published studies countering global warming fears
While the news focus has been on the lowest ice extent since satellite monitoring began in 1979 for the Arctic, the Southern Hemisphere (Antarctica) has quietly set a new record for most ice extent since 1979. A new analysis of peer-reviewed literature reveals that more than 500 scientists have published evidence refuting at least one element of current man-made global warming scares. More than 300 of the scientists found evidence that 1) a natural moderate 1,500-year climate cycle has produced more than a dozen global warmings similar to ours since the last Ice Age and/or that 2) our Modern Warming is linked strongly to variations in the sun's irradiance.

Understanding UFO Secrecy in the 21st Century
While not new - Steven Greer wrote this in 1999 - the article spells out clearly and without distracting emotional garbage, why UFO data are being kept top secret to this day, and what the dangers are of a closed military group dealing with the matter. Change is urgently needed, today as it was back at the end of the last century. We must insist on transparency, lest we be judged by the disastrous results of the "diplomacy" of military minds. This is a call to action that unfortunately has not found a proper echo in these last few years.

Russian Human Genome Project discovers ET abilities to modify DNA through a "biological internet"
‘The human DNA is a biological Internet’ with evidence that DNA can be ‘influenced and reprogrammed by words and frequencies.’ This suggests that ‘our DNA is not only responsible for the construction of our body, but also serves as data storage and communication.’ The Russian scientists and linguists have found that the genetic code ‘follows the same rules as all our human languages.’

The Russian researchers believe that ‘Living chromosomes function just like a holographic computer using endogenous DNA laser radiation. This means that they managed to modulate certain frequency patterns (sound) onto a laser-like ray which influence DNA frequency and thus the genetic information itself. Since the basic structure of DNA-alkaline pairs and language is of the same structure, no DNA decoding is necessary. One can simply use words and sentences of the human language! This, too, was experimentally proven!’

Is AIDS caused by a virus or is the immune weakness we observe in some people due to environmental toxins that degrade immune functions and thereby open those affected to the ravages of 'secondary' or 'opportunistic' infections?

The concept of AIDS and especially the idea of a viral cause for immune weakness, stands and falls with our methods of diagnosis. When we tell people they are infected with a virus that must be kept in check with pharmaceutical drugs, we really have little to base such an affirmation on. All we see from the tests is the presence of a certain protein fraction of specific weight that is thought to be associated with the presence of a destructive virus. But is this really the case?

Well, the protein fraction that is supposed to show the presence of a virus can only be found in about 40 % of "infected" individuals. The virus cannot be isolated from those infected individuals, and whenever something is isolated, it cannot be used to infect healthy individuals, which would be proof that indeed the virus causes the degradation of immune defenses that is typical of AIDS.

Too many questions remain open to confirm that HIV indeed does cause AIDS and that an anti-viral intervention is the proper type of therapy. Beldeu Singh says that AIDS diagnostics are based on pseudo science, and it does not seem he is wrong about that. Here is what he says about the tests:

The question by Dr Andrew Maniotis, Ph.D. (Program Director in the Cell and Developmental Biology of Cancer, Department of Pathology, and Bioengineering, University of Illinois at Chicago
Chicago, IL 60607) raises the specter of pseudo-science and how it can be used to prey on ignorance and build a multi-billion dollar industry. It is about deciding whether you are HIV-positive based on a cut-off in the reading of a test that tests for the amount of a protein called p24. His poser:-

Can you be "HIV" positive with a value of 2 consecutive tests exceeding or equaling 30pg/ml (picograms per milliliter) p24 protein versus 29pg/ml of p24 protein, and do you need toxic antiretroviral if you have a consistent value of 30pg/ml value versus a consistent p24 value of 29pg/ml or lower? Why are healthy control cells considered by the DAIDS culturing manual to be 29pg/ml or less on consecutive tests while diseased, 'HIV' infected cells are valued at 30pg/ml or more (*see below).

Does anyone know if these women who were dissuaded from breast feeding and who tested positive for "HIV" were tested according to The DAIDS 1997 official "HIV" culturing manual, where it says, under quality control, Section VI, page 45, "Do not use PHA stimulated PBMC older than 3 days post stimulation when testing them for the absence of HIV from your healthy donor source," and in the Reporting Results Section (section VII), a rationale follows that apparently employs both healthy (or non-infected cells) and infected cells-although I don't think anybody tests intentionally non-"infected cells") in a manner that is rational or what we would considered CONTROLLED. For example:

Cultures whose supernatant meet one of the following criteria are considered culture positive IF:

"Two consecutive HIV p24 antigen VQA CORRECTED values of > 30 pg/ml (read: from a healthy donor source), of which the second value is at least four times greater than the first value or "out of range" (O.D.>2); Or

"Two consecutive HIV p24 antigen VQA CORRECTED values (read: from a healthy donor source) that are "out of range (Optical density.> 2); Or

"Three consecutive HIV p24 antigen VQA CORRECTED values of > 30 pg/ml (read: from a healthy donor source), where neither consecutive value is > four times the previous sample, but the third value is at least four times greater than the first,"

Would you consider a sample negative (read: from a healthy donor source) if the 3 consecutive HIV p24 antigen VQA corrected values read (first test) 25 pg/ml, and (second test) 15 pg/ml, (third test) 5 pg/ml?

Would you use these cells as uninfected controls?

Asked another way, are these control cells considered non-infected if they read 25 on the first reading, and 15 on the second and 5 on the third?

Try a second sample using the first criterion stated above: (And the poser becomes more intriguing).

"Two consecutive HIV p24 antigen VQA CORRECTED values of > 30 pg/ml, of which the second value is at least four times greater than the first value or out of range" (O.D.>2)

First sample =6pg/ml: second sample) = 23pg/ml

Yes? No? Maybe better get other "healthy cells" than go with a 6 and a 23? Or are these two readings enough to say, "Aw-what the heck-they aren't over 30pg/ml and the second series isn't quite 4 times greater than the first value of 6, so I will just tell the doc that they are negative, and will tell the patient nothing about it?

Well, pseudo-science does work if you have institutions behind you or rather in front of you to endorse the tests. After all, most people and politicians are not science literate up to that level at which they will pose questions based on basic science that can help reveal the truth and reveal whether the test is based on science or pseudo-science. And there is no need to worry about the doctors who will recommend these tests and prescribe the pharmaceutically prescribed “medication”. Doctors are not always scientists. Most of them are not trained as researchers or scientists. They are trained to administer the test and prescribe.

The first part of the AIDS pseudo-science is found in a statement by Dr. Gallo. Dr Robert Gallo, the American government researcher whose team developed and marketed the first test kits, says in a letter in this month’s Harper’s that "no test in medicine is perfect, but done correctly and with a confirmatory second test, the HIV blood test developed in our laboratory comes close." The fact is there are no confirmatory tests. The so-called "confirmatory test", called western blot, relied on the same principle as the test kits it was supposed to be checking and so was liable to the same kind of false-positive reactions. These test kits carry the same disclaimer - that they cannot be used to diagnose and treat AIDS. Subsequent research has repeatedly confirmed this problem: more than 60 conditions that cause such false-positives have been documented. One is malaria. Another is flu. Another is tuberculosis, which produces symptoms of AIDS as defined in Africa and is immensely widespread among impoverished people (see HIV Test Bogus - Based on Circular Reasoning, May 23 2006, Health Supreme).

Palamara et al, investigated the effect of glutathione on the replication of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in chronically infected macrophages, a known reservoir of the virus in the body [AIDS Res Hum Retroviruses 1996 Nov 1;12(16):1537-41] and found that exogenous GSH strongly suppresses the production of p24 protein. That is an interesting link between glutathione (GSH), an antioxidant enzyme produced in the body and p24. The higher the amount of exogenous GSH the lower the amount of p24 the body will produce. Similarly if the patient gets bioavailable selenium which is essential to the production of glutathione in the body the level of p24 will decline. So, is the p24 part of the body’s antioxidant defense mechanism and an indication of low glutathione or is it an antigen that indicates a viral infection? Take into account the fact that it is not viral specific and not specific to the HIV ((see: Are Malnutrition and Oxidative Stress the Cause of gp41, gp120 and gp160 in Robert Gallo's HIV Isolate?)

As I predicted (see: AIDS, NON-HIV AIDS AND PRESCRIPTION AIDS), there will never be a vaccine for AIDS - "The only logical hypothesis is that toxic chemicals, whether or not they are approved for medication, if they generate free radicals in the body that decrease white blood cell count or kill T4 cells or damage the cell walls of cells of the immune system or the endocrine system will generate AIDS. It results in immune deficiencies or immune disorders or damage to the genetic material and explains the variation of the symptoms of AIDS and that also means there will be no such thing as an AIDS vaccine". How can there be a vaccine for a condition that is precipitated by excess free radicals? But what is peculiar to these HIV tests?

“It never proved possible to validate the tests by culturing, purifying and analyzing particles of the purported virus from patients who test positive, then demonstrating that these are not present in patients who test negative. This was despite heroic efforts to make the virus reveal itself in patients with Aids or at risk of Aids, in which their immune cells were stimulated for weeks in laboratory cultures using a variety of agents.

After the cells had been activated in this way, HIV pioneers found some 30 proteins in filtered material that gathered at a density characteristic of retroviruses. They attributed some of these to various parts of the virus. But they never demonstrated that these so-called "HIV antigens" belonged to a new retrovirus.

So, out of the 30 proteins, how did they select the ones to be defined as being from HIV? The answer is shocking, and goes to the root of what is probably the biggest scandal in medical history. They selected those that were most reactive with antibodies in blood samples from Aids patients and those at risk of Aids.

This means that "HIV" antigens are defined as such not on the basis of being shown to belong to HIV, but on the basis that they react with antibodies in Aids patients. Aids patients are then diagnosed as being infected with HIV on the basis that they have antibodies” (see: HIV Test Bogus - Based on Circular Reasoning, May 23 2006, Health Supreme).

The circular reasoning appears sound but there is science to suggest or even clearly indicate that the Gallo isolate does not contain a virus but possibly polymer actin proteins produced by white blood cells under oxidative stress, the kind of oxidative stress found in malnourished people and in people recovering from malaria or flu etc. The antibodies in such people are an auto-immune response of their body to these polymer proteins. Hence they respond clinically to proper nutritional interventions (see: Are Malnutrition and Oxidative Stress the Cause of gp41, gp120 and gp160 in Robert Gallo's HIV Isolate?). Now they are saying that they have only detected virus particles.

The AIDS posse claims that the HIV is an enveloped virus but to date no one has seen it under the electron microscope and no one has observed its budding process. It is supposed to be a big virus, because they claim that it is complex and can integrate its genetic material into the host DNA and later on this genetic material can slice itself out and become re-activated. All these processes require an intricate enzyme system. Such enzymes have not been proven either.

And there are many AIDS sufferers who do not have the virus that the AIDS posse claims is virulent and targets the immune system and impairs it sufficiently to allow opportunistic infections to establish in the patients, especially carcinomas and infections of the lungs. Yet 5000 researchers recently signed a document declaring that the HIV is the sole cause of AIDS. Such is the power of pseudo-science.

Basic secondary school science education can equip you to know that for a virus or any pathogen to be the sole cause of a disease, it must be found in every patient and it must be isolated and used to re-infect healthy hosts to prove that it is in fact the sole agent causing the disease. Dr. Gallo has testified that the so called HIV virus is found in only 40% of the cases and it is not detected directly but its existence is assumed by only looking for the p24 protein in the supernatants. And is that protein merely a protein or an antigen…well lets see…by studying their recommended diagnostic test as described above by Dr Andrew Maniotis.

So…must you be given toxic antiretroviral drugs when you have 30pg/ml p24 protein versus 29pg/ml of p24 protein or if you have a consistent value of 30pg/ml value versus a consistent p24 value of 29pg/ml or lower? And if they read 25 on the first reading and 15 on the second and 5 on the third are you to be treated as non-infected?

If the antigen is virus specific as they claim it to be, then why must the diagnosis be based on the amount of p24 protein rather than on its presence or absence? Why? I hope your doctor or your health authorities can explain that to you. It cannot be an antigen specific to the HIV and it may be nothing more than a polymer actin protein associated with oxidative stress. .

It appears to be a case of a bogus virus and a bogus antigen with bogus tests that have established a legitimate industry.

How vitamin C stops the big 'C'
Nearly 30 years after Nobel laureate Linus Pauling famously and controversially suggested that vitamin C supplements can prevent cancer, a team of Johns Hopkins scientists have shown that in mice at least, vitamin C - and potentially other antioxidants - can indeed inhibit the growth of some tumors ¯ just not in the manner suggested by years of investigation.

“When a cell lacks oxygen, HIF-1 helps it compensate,” explains Dang. “HIF-1 helps an oxygen-starved cell convert sugar to energy without using oxygen and also initiates the construction of new blood vessels to bring in a fresh oxygen supply.”

Some rapidly growing tumors consume enough energy to easily suck out the available oxygen in their vicinity, making HIF-1 absolutely critical for their continued survival. But HIF-1 can only operate if it has a supply of free radicals. Antioxidants remove these free radicals and stop HIF-1, and the tumor, in its tracks.

A dose of vitamin D could add years to your life
Scientists have already shown that a deficiency of vitamin D may be to blame for 600,000 cancer cases each year. Other studies have linked low levels of the vitamin with heart disease and diabetes. Now it is being credited with reducing the risk of death from any causes. In the latest research, published today in the Archives of Internal Medicine, results from 57,000 people in 18 separate trials of vitamin D supplements were analysed.

FDA's Guidance Document on Dietary Supplements Undermines Consumer Choice of 50 Million Americans on Behalf of Big Pharma
The Guidance provides all the hallmarks of a system that will phase out the structure/function claim environment that has been so important to consumer choice and which has been allowed under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) since 1994. Furthermore, the Guidance places the burden firmly on clinical trials or human observational studies and ascribes no value to clinical experience, medical records, in vitro studies or animal studies. This regime will ultimately favor large corporations and Big Pharma which are the only parties with sufficient money to undertake randomized controlled trials. Smaller companies, who have been the life blood and pioneering force in the rapidly expanding, consumer-driven natural health market, will be left out in the cold.

FAO Promotes Organic Agriculture
The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) has come out in favour of organic agriculture. Its report Organic Agriculture and Food Security explicitly states that organic agriculture can address local and global food security challenges. Organic farming is no longer to be considered a niche market within developed countries, but a vibrant commercial agricultural system practised in 120 countries, covering 31 million hectares (ha) of cultivated land plus 62 million ha of certified wild harvested areas. The organic market was worth US$40 billion in 2006, and expected to reach US$70 billion by 2012.

Nadia Scialabba, an FAO official, defined organic agriculture as: “A holistic production management system that avoids the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, and genetically modified organisms, minimizes pollution of air, soil and water, and optimises the health and productivity of plants, animals and people.” The strongest benefits of organic agriculture, Scialabba said, are its reliance on fossil fuel independent, locally available resources that incur minimal agro-ecological stresses and are cost effective. She described organic agriculture as a “neo-traditional food system” which combines modern science and indigenous knowledge.

Babies Given Antidepressants In New Zealand
Medical authorities are ‘mystified and concerned’ at figures suggesting antidepressant drugs are being prescribed for children, some less than a year old, according to a report in the New Zealand Herald. A look at records at Pharmac, the national drug buying agency, suggests thousands of scrips are being written annually for children under 10.

Pfizer’s AIDS Drug Viracept Contains Carcinogen
A potential human carcinogen has been found in batches of Viracept, according to a letter the drugmaker is sending to doctors. The carcinogen - ethyl methanesulfonate or EMS - is the same one that caused Roche to recall the drug in Europe, but Pfizer says levels found in its own batches were “substantially lower.”

Avandia raises heart attacks - should be pulled from market
Two studies and an editorial today should lead the Food and Drug Administration to pull the diabetes pill Avandia off the market, the authors say. Steven Nissen, the cardiovascular medicine chief at the Cleveland Clinic and co-author of one study, raised concerns about Avandia's heart attack risk in May with a study in The NewEngland Journal of Medicine. It pooled results of 42 short-term clinical trials and found that Avandia patients were 43% more likely to have a heart attack or be hospitalized for blocked coronary arteries than other patients.

Less SSRI's, More Suicide -- Apparently Not
There was a story running in the media about a week ago that made the connection between falling prescriptions for psychiatric drugs and an increase in suicides. Only, it appears that there was no increase in suicides to begin with...
"Now that the 2005 suicide data are available from the CDC (as mentioned yesterday), one can see that despite SSRI prescriptions falling, there was apparently a very slight decrease in suicides. That does not lend credence to the story that decreased SSRI use leads to more suicides."

Analysis: Deaths From Drug Reactions Up
The number of deaths and serious injuries from prescription and over-the-counter drugs climbed from 34,966 to 89,842 during the study of reports to the Food and Drug Administration. Potent narcotic painkillers including Oxycontin, sold generically as oxycodone, were among 15 drugs most often linked with deaths in the study. Drugs frequently linked with serious nonfatal complications included insulin, the arthritis drugs Vioxx and Remicade, and the antidepressant Paxil. The report adds to recent criticism of FDA oversight on drug safety, including its handling of serious problems connected with Vioxx, which was removed from the market in 2004.

Bereaved Mom Hunts Purdue Pharma Execs
Marianne Skolek is angry, and she won’t rest until the individuals who she believes are responsible for her daughter’s death are punished. In her view, those individuals are the execs at Purdue Pharma, which sells OxyContin. In 2002, her 29-year-old daughter was prescribed the painkiller for a herniated disk and wound up dying of heart failure, leaving behind a 6-year-old son.

HPV Vaccine is owned by US Government - trials were less than encouraging
Although trials of the vaccine in Costa Rica did not assess safety and showed limited efficacy, the push is on to vaccinate as many girls in school age as possible and even boys, as an obscure correlation of HPV with mouth cancer (correlation, not causation!) has recently been postulated. What kind of government program could be behind the vaccine push, apart from just plain exchange for campaign contributions?

THE PH MIRACLE - THERE IS NO DISEASE
The conventional medicine approach says that high cholesterol is caused by a chemical imbalance in the liver, which is the organ that produces cholesterol. Thus the treatment for high cholesterol is a prescription drug that inhibits the liver's production of cholesterol (statin drugs). Upon taking these drugs, the high cholesterol (the 'disease') is regulated, but what was causing the liver to overproduce cholesterol in the first place? That causative factor remains ignored.

The root cause of high cholesterol, as it turns out, is primarily an over acidic diet. A person who eats foods that are acidic will inevitably cause the body to go into preservation mode and produce more cholesterol to neutralize the excess acid thus showing the symptoms of this so-called disease of high cholesterol. You see it is not the cholesterol that is bad it is the acid producing food we eat that is bad. Reduce the acid producing foods like beef, chicken, pork, dairy, coffee, tea, soda pops, etc and you will reduce the protective cholesterol that is saving your life from excess acid foods.

A team led by scientists from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, Pennsylvania State University, the USDA Agricultural Research Service, University of Arizona, and 454 Life Sciences has found a significant connection between the Israeli Acute Paralysis Virus (IAPV) and colony collapse disorder (CCD) in honey bees.

Engineered Sugar Beets Coming in 2008
American Crystal, a large Wyoming-based sugar company, who ironically have launched an "organic" line of their sugar, and several other leading U.S. sugar providers have announced they will be sourcing their sugar from genetically engineered (GE) sugar beets beginning this year and arriving in stores in 2008. Like GE corn and GE soy, products containing GE sugar will not be labeled as such. Since half of the granulated sugar in the U.S. comes from sugar beets, a move towards biotech beets marks a dramatic alteration of the U.S. food supply.

Candy companies like Hershey's are urging farmers not to plant GE sugar beets, noting that consumer surveys suggest resistance to the product. In addition the European Union has not approved GE sugar beets for human consumption.

Radiation clue to brain-cell damage by mobiles
MOBILE phone radiation may cause serious damage to the brain by triggering a chemical reaction that leads cells to divide, say scientists. The finding could be the key to claims that mobiles cause cancer and other health problems. The Israeli researchers have identified a mechanism through which the radiation may affect the differentiation and division of cells.

Germany Warns Citizens to Avoid Wi-Fi
People should avoid using Wi-Fi wherever possible because of the risks it may pose to health, the German government has said. The Environment Ministry recommended that people should keep their exposure to radiation from Wi-Fi "as low as possible" by choosing "conventional wired connections". It added that it is "actively informing people about possibilities for reducing personal exposure".

MICROCHIP IMPLANTS CAUSE FAST-GROWING, MALIGNANT TUMORS IN LAB ANIMALS
Albrecht first became aware of the microchip-cancer link when she and her "Spychips" co-author, Liz McIntyre, were contacted by a pet owner whose dog had died from a chip-induced tumor. Albrecht then found medical studies showing a causal link between microchip implants and cancer in other animals. Before she brought the research to the AP's attention, the studies had somehow escaped public notice. A four-month AP investigation turned up additional documents, several of which had been published before VeriChip's parent company, Applied Digital Solutions, sought FDA approval to market the implant for humans. The VeriChip received FDA approval in 2004 under the watch of then Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson who later joined the company's board.
